...as we turn our white skin red...

It has happened:

PJ had his last day of the regular school year this past Friday! It was, at times, a tough road for my little Dude this school year, but we made it and I could not be happier! We are now five days into the summer, and it's time to start chipping away at our Summer Bucket List.

We have already gone on a small vacation to Lancaster (more on that later) but there is a huge list of things that we would like to do this summer with PJ. Our Boy, although not one for the heat, is always at his best during the summer months. It has only taken this first five days for our bedtime routine to go completely out the window, but that's no reason to think we can't reach loftier goals! So, with that, behold:

Our Summer of 2014 Bucket List

I get a shiver in my bones just thinking about the weather...

{stream of consciousness}

I haven't blogged in a while- it's been busy and chaotic and noisy in our house, and when I finally get PJ to sleep, I just want to sit on the couch and binge watch Golden Girls. During times when I can't get to my blog, I often think of great things to write about, and even jot them down in my planner with full intent to write some sort of masterpiece that will go viral and catapult me to some sort of vague internet fame. I always want to write like that but, more often, when I have had a break from blogging, I sit down and fill the screen with word vomit.

We aren't all cut out for fame, I guess.

The regular school year is winding down, and we have two glorious week of vacation until PJ goes back for Extended School Year. ESY is something I am torn about. It's in place for children with special needs to continue to attend school over the summer. It allows kiddos like PJ to have extra time to work on their skills and also offers continuity of the school program for kids who need that kind of consistency in their lives. I am split two ways about ESY. On one hand, the time our district offers, compared to other districts, is pitiful. I would love for PJ to have a longer, better-structured ESY to prevent any regression that might happen during the summer. On the other hand, I just want to have a regular old, school-free summer with my Best Dude. To let our bedtime rules go lax and sleep in and spend day after day at the pool and beach and finding adventure. ESY is, sometimes, a reminder that it's not quite the same for PJ as it is for a typically developing child.

Still, it's all okay. PJ likes school and some continuity is better than nothing. He is also done for the day by 10:30am, so we still have a whole day ahead of us after to fill with swimming and play dates and trips to cool places. Summer is my favorite time to have a son. It's pretty awesome all year round, but nothing beats adventures with my favorite guy! PJ is always his bravest, best self in the summer.

As PJ gets older I guess the difference between him and "typically developing" children will become more apparent. Taking time out for extra school and therapies and such is not on the radar of every family. That's okay, of course. If those things weren't on our radar, then PJ wouldn't be, either, and I'd give up a million summers for PJ. We just keep swimming...and beaching...and play date-ing.

When we used to laugh about nothing at all...

{things on thursday...}

...that thing? When someone writes something you wish you could, and does it with a billion times more eloquence and meaning and truth than you could even dream of having? Yup. Here you go.

...Soccer ended last week and PJ got his first ever sports trophy! Pete belongs to the school of thought that says kids get too many "participation" awards, but didn't that nerd tear up when PJ got his trophy? I am looking forward to the fall when the new season starts. PJ's behavior was sometimes difficult (running away, throwing the ball instead of kicking it, wearing the cones on his head) but the volunteers were so patient and wonderful with him!

...After I finish up this post, I am going to watch "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". This is one of my all-time favorite books, and if the movie messes up ONE BIT OF IT, you will hear me wailing from all over the eastern seaboard. I am very, very picky about books made into movies. Generally, they screw it up. Remember "Circle of Friends", the Maeve Binchy book that became Minnie Driver's first big break? OHOLYCRAP, they completely changed the ending and I am still infuriated about that!! I become very attached to books, and get married to the way I dream up the characters in my head. This makes it impossible for a movie to ever measure up.

...The oldest/bestest and I are running in a 5k obstacle course this weekend known as the ROC Race! Despite the face that I haven't run in over a week, I am really excited about this race! There's a giant, inflatable water slide. Enough said.

...I have been lusting after this ModCloth dress for ages, and I think it will be my first treat to myself when I hit a Weight Watchers milestone loss. Despite the fact that I am 5'1 and they make me look squat, I have a thing for maxi dresses. They make me so happy. I used to have a closet full of them, but I wore them to death, so it's high time  I spruced up my collection of clothing that is gorgeous, yet unflattering!

...This is a completely "nothing" post, but it is serving its purpose of keeping me in the practice. I find that when I sit down and type often, I can get into a groove of good, satisfactory writing. I have had the amazing opportunity in the past few months to contribute to some local publications, and it has been a great experience for me.

...And now, it's time to go watch a movie.

Save your heart attack...

....linking up (super late) with Kathy for some Humpday Confessions!

Vodka and Soda

...It's the Stanley Cup Finals- my favorite time of year! Even though the Flyers rarely make it past the first or second round, I love hockey in late spring! This year it's the Rangers vs the Kings and, although they are arch-rivals of the Flyers, I am rooting for the Rangers. This is due to my heavy worship of former Ranger Mark Messier. He was always the player that I dreamed would be traded to the Flyers one day! And also, have you met current Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist?

You're welcome.

...I have stuck to my Weight Watchers plan for three days in a row. Who wants to throw me a party???

...I wrote a piece for the June issue of South Jersey Mom Magazine about ways to spice up a Mom's Night Out. It was a lot of fun to write, but the irony is that I am rarely out past 8:30. Last month, I contributed a piece on how to find household tips on Pinterest. Pffffft. Maybe I should go into fiction.

...We have PJ's IEP meeting on Monday and I am getting nervous thinking about it. Next year is his last year of pre-school and I am hoping it will be as productive as possible in order to get him as ready as possible for kindergarten. This meeting will help all of us - Pete and I, PJ's teachers, therapists, social workers, etc- create a road map that will best get him to the destination we're looking for. This school year has been a difficult one, and I am hoping that his new IEP will help get him back on track when school starts in the fall.

...PJ and I slept like crap last night because it was HOT. The weather took a sudden turn and it feels like summer outside. I try to hold out as long as possible {cheap} but today, I finally gave in and turned the air conditioning on, and I am looking forward to a much better night of sleep tonight.

...I am still counting the seconds until we start officially looking at houses in the middle of nowhere with no neighbors in areas with great schools. {ahem}

...I desperately need a haircut. It looks like a small, fine-haired animal that met the bum end of an electric fence is living on my head. All I need to do is find a stylist and commit the time. Pffft.

....I'm going to watch the third period of this game in bed. Night!

First you get a swimming pool...

Linking up with Time for Mom!

Today was a good day to be Mom.

Mondays are full days at school for PJ, and when I picked him up at 3, he was a hot, sweaty mess after playing on the playground. He got a good report from his teachers, so we made a quick pit stop on the way home. Twenty minutes later, this was happening:

The pool, brand-new from the box, was a little misshapen, but it didn't bother PJ in the slightest. He slid, he splashed, he jumped and swam, getting out only to run to me and express his happiness with a "Whooooo hooooo!"

The best part? The 4:30pm tantrum that PJ has executed nearly every day for the past two weeks was totally averted. Completely worth $17.50. For sure.

It's hard to argue with that face.

Today ended up being a stellar Monday after a few weeks of days with, at least, a few difficult moments in each. Skipping that 4:30 meltdown seemed to do everyone some good, and it was a happy, dirty, grass-speckled kiddo in the bathtub tonight.
